The role of L1 in FL teaching and learning remains a point of contention among many researchers and teachers: some see L1 as an invaluable resource or tool, while others view it as negative and harmful to the learning process. Points of discussion include the purpose or function of L1 use in a crosslingual teaching strategy, the attitudes of both students and teachers, the quantity of L1 use and the circumstances to types of its use. Based on the functions of intralingual and crosslingual strategies in FL teaching, and certain theoretical justifications, we should learn what are the relevent factors involved in strategy selection and how to adopt appropriate strategies in different learning stages. To do so requires a combination of intralingual and crosslingual strategies in FL teaching/learning.
