Content: Redemption desirability and tactics of paradoxical narration are prominent features of Zhang wei's novels. This article illustrates those features in detail by three stages of his novel-composing. Zhang wei's early writing is a kind of linear thought wrapt in idealism, and lack paradoxical tension, so these novels are simplex and shallow. Since his A Pond of Clear Water, Zhang wei's individual thought begins to rouse. From Ancient Vessel to family novels, the ambivalence between historical rationality and value rationality embodies Zhang wei's metaphysical thought on human living situation, which are expressed in the form of objective method. So his novels of this stage are abundant and profound in image. In recent novels, the redemption desirability and the style of paradoxical narration still exist. But they are always used for his subjective statement, which make redemption only a kind of gesture. Consequently, the uncertainty and the aesthetic tension filled in these novels tend to disappear. The paradox of the existence and expressing redemption paradoxically for human being produce a kind of aesthetic atmosphere which is the most charming aspect of Zhang wei's novels.
