Zhang Wei is the writer who has spirit pursuit. His novels put emphasis ondescribing the characters’ change of space activities, and have some relativelyfixed space images. These space images can be divided into three groups of spaceimages in Zhang Wei’s novels: the city space images, the country space images, and the author idealized space images. The three groups images play an importantrole of the structure in the novel narrative, and as the spiritual symbols areendowed with different social connotation by the author. Through to the analysis ofthe space narrative about Zhang Wei’s novels, this paper argues that Zhang Wei istries to critical negative factors of the urbanization process and the modern societyin his works. Meanwhile, it displays that literature how to reproduce Chinese socialtransformation under the appeal of the modernity, and describes the increasinglycramped living space under the crisis of modernity. What’s more, his works reflectthe intellectuals of contradictory mentality of wandering in the ideals and thereality, the center and the edge when they have provided the imaginative solutionsin literature.
