Study On English Loan Words In Chinese

The thesis mainly focuses on the loan words in Chinese and their influence on Chinese social culture. Firstly the discussion of the relationship between language and culture is offered, analyzing the impact of English loan words upon Chinese social culture. Secondly, the close attention is paid to the emergence of large amount of English loan words in Chinese and the phenomenon of language imperialism. Some implications for English teaching in China are given on this foundation. Then the translation strategy towards English loan words is presented. There's a detailed argument on the translation strategy of domestication and foreignization. It is strongly recommended that scholars and translators try using the strategy of domestication. After that, the globalization of language and emergence of global language (which currently refers to English according to some linguists and anthropologists, such as David Crystal), which follow the globalization of economy, are mentioned. It is well-known that the trend of globalization of language is the side product of the globalization of economy, so the increasing number of the English loan words in Chinese will definitely help to consolidate the status of English as the current global language, which to some extent, weakens the status of Chinese accordingly. The thesis ends with the status and significant role of English loan words in Chinese. Thus the conclusion is drawn: Although the English loan words have some negative impact on Chinese, only if we can realize this problem early, we can take proper measure to avoid linguistic imperialism and its extreme version (language death and language disappearance). With the development of China's economy, Chinese will play an increasingly important role in the world.
