In the context of enlightenment, paying close attention to the spiritual kernel of Cao Yu's dramas at the earlier stage is to develop inner significance of dramatist's works and reveal the side of the history of times spirit through placing his works in the history of society and literature.The first piece of writing is concerned with tracing to source of and combing the Enlightenment. The part includes the original and development in the western country and development and evolution in China. Modern enlightenment treats individualism and rationalism as his essential concept and firmly establishes the value principle of liberalism which would guarantees to establish the spirit featuring freedom, equality, tolerance, universal, love and the democratic system. It is to assure that the human being could advance and develop unceasingly and peacefully. After revealing the essence of enlightenment, this part analyzes the main purpose against the wide back ground in China's modern times.The second piece expounds the spirit of enlightenment in Cao Yu's dramas text from two key concept of: individualism and rationalism. Individualism is embodied in bis dramas from two points of view. For one thing, the people in his drama ask for individual dignity and stick up for it, and enlighten the self-defined consciousness. For another, they pursue equality, freedom and happiness. The rational spirit which is contained in people's life value is embodied in the revelation of perplexed human nature, and the issue criticizing the national character embodies the main purpose ofenlightenment, erecting people in modern China.Last piece studies the influence coming from Chinese and western countries which Cao Yu receives. Many thoughts such as democratism, humanitarianism, Confucianism, Taoism and Christianity culture make the spirit of enlightenment present in Cao Yu's dramas. Though Cao Yu doesn't proclaim that he assimilates certain thought as other contemporary writers do, He expresses the rich implication of spirit in his drama text which even isn't realized by himself. Furthermore, the deficiency in enlightenment in his latter dramas proves this as well.Lastly, the Enlightenment implied in Cao Yu's dramas at earlier stage is contribution to the literature history and revelation.
