S Cultural Thought

Liang Shuming was a prominent representative of cultural conservatism in 20th century. His cultural philosophy first equally discussed the Chinese culture in the international cultural structure, and confirm the Chinese culture significance and value. This paper illustrates his cultural thought in three aspects: the background and source, contents and historical status. The publishing of The Chinese and Western Culture and philosophy, marking the beginning of hang shuming抯 cultural research, had deep background of times and philosophical source. The trend of total westernization of new cultural movement and the school of Eastern Culture and confronting in China at that time; while at the other shore of the ocean, the West had announced the bankrupt of the idea that regarded the Western Culture as the means of saving the world. Just at the time that national crisis and cultural crisis existed commonly, Liang Shuming began his research of cultural philosophy. He criticized different western and Chinese theories and propagates Confucianism. He pointed out that the future of the world will be the renaissance of Chinese culture. Liang Shuming cultural thought is divided into three parts. The Theory of Three main Roads is his cultural philosophy, in which, he points out that China, the West and India, due to different life attitudes, are three different roads, in presenting themselves on culture. And that through the analysis on the Chinese and Western Culture from the angle of sociology, giving the view that the Chinese culture is he Early Enlightenment of Rationality and Precocity of culture?is his Cultural Sociology. In addition, it points out that taking rationality as root and intuition as well as reason as nonessentials is his cultural psychology. Liang shuming cultural thought leaped over a historical period of nearly half a century and all the time, it could be traced to the same origin. Liang Shuming devoted himself to establishing his system of cultural theory, becoming the founder of modern new-Confucianism. However, Liang Shuming neglected the contradiction and the generation gap between Confucian ideologywhich is the patriarchal social product and the modern society. Because he was against Marxism, he didn confess the social existence decisive role on the human society, therefore, he could not find the key to opening the labyrinth human culture from the beginning to the end.
