Pueblo Crisis was a significant episode in the relations between the United States andKorean Peninsular in the cold war period, which brought about some changes to thepeninsular situations: Due to the miscalculations of the Democratic People's Republic ofKorea's (DPRK) motivation, the United States began de facto governmental engagement withNorth Korea; because of the discontent to American's policy towards North Korea, theRepublic of Korea began seeking self-dependent security, rift emerged in American-SouthKorean relations. These changes have obvious trans-cold war characteristics. But as to thebackgrounds that caused these changes, the cold war thinking played an important role. So theanalysis of the Pueblo crisis is useful to better the understanding of the cold war specificityand the historical continuity in Korean-American relations. This theme will study the origins, process, and the different negotiation tactics of NorthKorea and the United States, in order to investigate the factors influenced the Pueblonegotiation, providing a historical frame to understanding the current American-Koreanrelations. The theme is divided into four parts as follows: Part one: analyses the Korean Peninsular situations in 1960s and introduces the eruptionof the "pueblo" incident. Part two: discusses American's crisis decision-making process, talking about NorthKorean diplomatic activities, pointing out the moves behind the road to negotiation. Part there: introduces the four stages of the whole negotiation, and the negotiationtactics. Part four: discusses the major factors--the cold war thinking, political culture differences, international status gap--which effected the negotiation tactics and negotiation results.
