Initiation is both universal and individual. It is of great interest in literature. However, critics differ on certain defining features of initiation fiction. In the HarryPotter series, J. K. Rowling emphasises maturation and initiation. In Harry's quests for his absent parents and against the Dark Lord, he is nurturedin Hogwarts and assisted by Dumbledore and other mentor roles. His sense of socialresponsibility is well developed. He gradually learns his life-altering lessons aboutpersonal identity and complex social issues. Due to Harry's orphan statues, hisadolescence is different from the typical adolescents' in terms of parental relationship. This paper combines theory of developmental psychology, initiation fiction, andexcerpts from Harry Potter books to discuss the adolescent initiation into societyinfluenced by familial and social factors. Meanwhile, the initiate himself also has theresponsibility for the making of his self identity.
