This thesis, on the basis of referring to achievements in scientific research created by our predecessors, from Fang Gan's friends, approaches a subject of his mindset being an official or Living as recluse, and on this account analyzes the subject of his poems, Meanwhile, investigates the mindset and the verse creations of the whole of poets who live as recluse in the late Tang Dynasty. The thesis has four parts.The first part, an introduction, summarizes Fang Gan's birth and record of events and his poems' current situation of research. The research achievements mainly have two aspects: first, it has been mentioned in various literary histories; second, the subject and artistic feature of his poems have been analyzed partially in some scientific treatises. Briefly summarized, although these research achievements approach Fang Gan's verse creations from a different angles and have a certain depth of research, deficiency is obvious. In consideration of this, this thesis tries to go a step further to analyze and approach.The second part approaches Fang Gan's friends and his complex whether being an official or a recluse. Fang Gan makes large friends in the circle of poem in the late Tang Dynasty. They are high officials or monks or recluses, thus, his heart road goes back and forth between an official and a recluse. To be an official is Fang Gan's dominant ideas while he lives in Jing-Hu as a hermit merely in order to get his equanimity of state of mind.The third part analyzes Fang Gan's collection of poems. At first, from the theme of poems, no matter what he composes in order to beg for an audience with an influential person, or no matter what he describes landscapes, his poems always express his own emotions, manifests his joy of life and heart world. Next, from artistic feature of his poems, artistic style shows clear and bright, thin and leisurely, lovely and forceful; in language, Fang Gan likes to refine upon the wording and phrasing and put to use literary reference.The forth part is conclusion and remarks, summarizes the four parts, through Fang Gan's complex of recluse, looks at the general mood of all poets in the late Tang Dynasty through a bamboo tube.
