The Research Of The Narrative Poems Of Mid-Tang Dynasty

China is a kingdom of poems. While the lyric had always remained the main poem style, the other form of poem, the epic, was pushed to a comparatively inferior position. But we should pay attention to the two periods in the development of Chinese ancient epics. The first is the rise of folk epics in Han dynasty, the second is the prosperity of intellectual epics in Tang dynasty. The development line of epic in Tang dynasty crooked ,from wave trough to wave crest, then back to the wave trough again, reaching the peek in the middle Tang dynasty. In this thesis, we will focus on the period of "mid_ Tang dynasty", and study the prosperous reality, the narrative skills, the innovation of the themes of epics. At the same time, the reason of this prosperity in epics will also be analyzed.This thesis can be divided into four parts. The task of the first part is to trace to the source. A general description of the development of epic in the period of "pre_ middle Tang dynasty" will be included in this part. So is the description of connection between epic of "middle Tang dynasty" and that of "Han dynasty". In addition, the first part also contains the elementary depict of the orientation of the development of the lyrics. In the second part, the author summarizes the development of epics in the period of "middle Tang dynasty" and discusses the deploitation of epic themes . The third part mainly contains the explanation of the new characteristics of the epics in "mid_ Tang dynasty". The first characteristic is that the writing skill of "disputation" is emphasized . This phenomenon could be verified in the epic works of Baijuyi, Yuanzhen and Hanyu . They either expressed their thoughts in the end of the text, or disputed a lot in the large scope of the text. In fact, at that time, this phenomenon was already quite popular in literary works. The second characteristic is the "turning essay_ like" of epics. This can be shown in Libai 's epics. In the "mid_ Tang dynasty ", Hanyu introduced the language and structure skills into the writing of poems. So the expressing function and the representing field of epics were somehow enlarged. The last characteristic is the legend skill of epics. In "mid _Tang dynasty" , the production of legend was blooming. So the writing of epics which are according to legend became popular. The influence of legend not only enriched the themes of epics, but also provided examples for its structure, narrative skills and the shaping of characters. Those epics, which were under the influence of legend, obviously shared the same trait with stories, featuring complicated plots and legendary luster. In conclusion, the epics in "mid _Tang dynasty" had exploited a lot in both the themes and the representation of poetry writing. In the last part of the thesis, the author analyzes the reasons of this prosperity in epics from the perspective of cultural background, politics , and literature development. And the judge of the influence and position of epics of "mid_ Tang dynasty" in the history of ancient Chinese literature will also be given out.
