Zheng Zhenduo(1898-1958) was one of the pioneering figures in the May Fourth New Cultural Movement. In his whole life, he not only made great achievements in literature, art, archeology, compilation and the clear-up of the national cultural legacy, but also made remarkable contributions to the Chinese translation cause. In the viewpoint of the author of the present thesis, the study on Zheng Zhenduo has been sufficient in almost all the aspects except translation; in fact, Zheng Zhenduo was not only a culturalist, a litterateur, an artist, an archaeologist and an editor, but also a prominent translator. Zheng Zhenduo not only translated and introduced lots of foreign literary works and literary theories, but also made insightful statements on the issues of translation theories. His main contributions to Chinese translation cause are his translation thoughts in the 1920's and his life-long devotion to organize and advocate translation activities. Based on a broad collection of the historical data between the 1920-50's and the references available since the 1920's, the author of the thesis aims to descriptively study Zheng Zhenduo's translation thoughts as well as his translating activities with the hope of making known this ignored translator.Starting from the May Fourth Movement, Zheng Zhenduo was engaged in the literary translation and never ceased to translate in his whole life. During the early period of the 1920's, he himself translated lots of Russian and Indian literary works; in the latter part of the 1920's and the beginning of the 1930's he translated the Greek and Roman literary works. The time when he did his main translation was the primary stage of establishing Chinese modern translation. His translation guided literary translation in that specific historical period of time. Besides, more often than not he laid emphasis on literature of the countries to which people paid little attention. In doing so, he filled in certain gap in developing Chinese new literature...
