A Comparative Study On The Development Of Modern Baoding And Tianjin (1840-1927)

It is the historical period that the Chinese society begins to make the transition to be modern, the theme of the transition is a modernization, city is a carrier of modernization of China, a place which distinctly reflects the course of the modernization of china . Baoding and Tianjin are typical of China's urban system, as an ordinary big city in a great deal of cities in China at present, Baoding in history is the political key city which has emerged in ancient China,a traditional landlocked city that moves towards the relative decline since modern times. As the unusual ultra big city of China and municipality directly under the Central Government at present, Tianjin in history is the ordinary city which rises later in ancient China , it is a economic key city that emerges rapidly since modern times and an opened port city coastally. But there in the academic circle still lack the achievement of research of comparing such two cities so far, from the point of view abovementioned,this research makes such a try of theory innovation compared with Tianjin to Baoding, the course of modernization of Baoding and Tianjin cities maybe represent two different kinds of city modernized road in China.This thesis divides into three stages: ancient times , modern initial stage , later stage of Qing Dynasty and early the republic of China,this research makes a comparison of development of Baoding and Tianjin from an angle of space development . The modern city is the continuity of the ancient city, so the author compares ancient Baoding with Tianjin at first,their historical origin and their space structure in city has a great similarity . Secondly, space of city development and city historical change of status are as outward show and inner show, having close relations, the change of the urban position must cause a great deal of changes including the urban space development , the development of the urban space reflects the historical position of the city.The author makes a comparison of Baoding and Tianjin on the thread of their political ,economic,cultural position.
