Research findings show that language learning strategies are teachable and strategy training can raise learners' strategy awareness and facilitate the language learning process. It has been proved that strategy training is a way to individualized learning and learner autonomy.Through studies on learning strategies of Chinese EFL learners, researchers have found that considerable Chinese EFL learners do not have an appropriate repertoire of learning strategies. They have limited strategy awareness and tend to rely on too narrow a range of learning strategies. As a result, Chinese EFL learners generally have a comparatively low degree of autonomy to take charge of their own learning processes. The research findings suggest that strategy factors become one of the major obstacles confining the efficiency of Chinese EFL teaching and learning.The correlation between strategy use and learning achievements, the teachability of learning strategies and the present condition of strategy use of Chinese EFL learners impel Chinese scholars and teachers to realize the value of learning strategies in the learning process and the significance of strategy training. It is generally agreed that there is a pressing need for enhancing strategy training and integrating learning strategies into language curriculum. In recent years, strategy training to EFL learners in China is receiving increasing attention and is gaining some momentum. National English Curriculum Standards and College English Curriculum Requirements, issued by Ministry of Education of China, explicitly advocate that one of the major goals of English education is to develop learners' strategy competence and foster learner autonomy. Though there are some strategy training endeavors in Chinese EFL context, most of them are incoherent and unsystematic, the effectualness of strategy training is therefore unsatisfying.
