" Image" is the fundamental category which has rich connotation and universalapplicability in Chinese culture and aesthetics. However, the Book of Changes, as thesource of Chinese culture, lays a foundation for the formation and change of thiscategory. Therefore, it has great theoretical significance and practical value for us todiscuss deeply and systemically the cultural connotation and aesthetic significance ofimage in the Book of Changes."Image" in the Book of Changes has two levels ofconnotations. One is phraseology, the other is thinking. "Image" of phraseologyincludes "image" of verb and "image" of noun. "Image" of verb has two kinds ofmeanings, symbolization and 取法.The "image" of noun has three kinds of meanings:"image" of thing, "image" of symbol and "image" of morality. "Image" ofphraseology has four characteristics: symbolization, polysemy, obscurity and 喻理性."Image" of thinking includes three kinds of thinking types: idea, symbolization,"image", which has three characteristics: integer of heaven and man; dialectic ofharmonious yin and yang opposites; intuition of inward enlightenment. The "image"category and "image" of thinking in the Book of changes have great and far-reachinginfluences on Chinese traditional aesthetics and art, which can be tested frommetaphorical symbolization, heaven and man, harmonious yin and yang opposites,inward intuition and the internal relevancy of Chinese traditional art. In a word,"image", in the Book of Changes, not only have rich and profound culturalconnotation, but also have great and far-reaching significance on Chinese traditionalaesthetics and art.
