The Study On Design Semantics

The theory of modern art of design is a systematic conclusion about conception ofdesign and concerned knowledge, which comes from gradual pondering, accumulating,summarizing and generalizing of people on practical activities of art design. It hassurpassed the phenomenon, experience and common sense, being a guidance of cultureand practice of design and an absolutely necessary weapon for designers. Throughlearning and practice on specialty in the past several years, I have deeply realized thatwithout guidance of theories of design and corresponding perspective and presidentialabilities on theory during making design, any excellent originality as well as highlyskilled design manner will not be immunized from blind, occasional, andhard-developed predicament, and the designer, only as a workman, is doomed to beeliminated through selection and contest under more dramatic social and internationalcompetition. The sense of crisis, pressure and seeking for strengthening academicattainment of myself and enlarging the view of art of design, is why I put the study ondesign semantics as the title of my graduation dissertation. The art of design, as a means of observing and framing the world, belongs toplastic arts of conveying the effect of visualization. It is also a subject of consideringvisual space as its own study object and exploring the structures of sculpt. The art ofdesign is a cultural phenomenon of connecting art and scientific technology, and awhole of creative instinct with new symbols and ideas. In the creative process ofchanging human themselves and the way of living with the unity of science, economy,society and art, human beings not only convert lifeless and spiritless materials andtechniques to living and spiritual things, but also at the same time enjoy the materialessence and cultural spirit, creating human civilization and constantly developingthemselves. From this point of view, design is an instructive activity of creating humancivilization and a kind of civilization by itself.As a language of human communication, the art of design includes not only 'naturelanguage' of voice and words, but also 'design language' of information symbolscomposed of point, line, surface, color, volume and space. The study on any languagecannot be parted with analysis and exploration to symbol, significance, function,structure, mobile changes, characters and so on. This dissertation aims at making a deepexploration on design semantics in the basis of modern linguistics and design aesthetics. Tracing the development history of design itself, we can see that, the art of designhas experienced a changing process from the form packing to functioning and fromtechnique subject to need subject. To the academic study of art of design, a great changeof theoretical views has taken place from aesthetic judgment and pragmatic function todesign semantics and cultural characters centered by semantics. Design language also belongs to 'artificial language' in contract to naturallanguage, a symbol system of human thinking and communicating tools. It is aprofessional symbol language and matter form language displayed with 'markcharacter'. The objective of establishing this language is to form mutual dialogue andcommunication with listening group through ideographic symbol systems programmedand created by designers. So, design language is also a communicating tool. Besides,although 'natural language' is the essence of design language semantics, designlanguage after all possesses its own immediate pragmatism. On the other hand, designlanguage consists of components of art language as well as scientific language. Thecomponents of scientific language mainly lie in exact expression of 'indicationfunction ' and 'explanation function'. The main functions of art language itselffunctioned as object and media lie in enlarging the density, mixture and multi-meaningof design semantics with a purpose of further enriching semantics and additionalinformation of design language.
