A Study On The Application Of CALL (Computer Assisted Language Learning) In College English Listening

The rapid development of modern educational technology has exerted a highly significant influence on college English teaching and learning. From the perspective of language listening teaching and learning, the traditional listening teaching method can not bring the learners' initiative into full play, so it is important to have a more scientific teaching and learning method for language listening. This thesis intends to discover the influence of Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL) on the teaching of college English listening.The literature review first gives a general description of language listening which is composed of the processing of listening, types of listening, real-life listening and characteristics of listening. Then the pedagogical approaches to CALL are introduced which involve a brief review of CALL and the theoretical foundation of CALL in language listening.With the aim of studying the influences of CALL on language listening, a survey study and an experimental study were made to collect data and testify the hypotheses. After analyzing the results from both the survey study and the experimental study, findings are that it is necessary to incorporate the traditional language listening teaching method with the modern educational technology—CALL, and the CALL teaching method is more effective than the traditional teaching method in improving students' listening comprehension level and memorizing the listening material. Suggestions are made from the perspectives that more subjects should be involved in the further study and a more scientific teaching method should be designed for the practical class teaching. Hopefully, this research can provide some helpful advice for the teachers in the teaching of English listening with a particular purpose to apply the modern educational technology to college English teaching and learning.
