A Comparative Study Between Dialect Words In SHUO WEN JIE ZI And Modern Chinese Dialect Words

SHUO WEN JIE ZI , an immortal linguistic monograph , inherits the tradition of dialect investigation , collects nearly 187 dialect words from different areas and reflects the dialect phenomenon of Han Dynasty . Up to now , it's still a treasury by which the development history of Chinese dialect vocabulary has been studied. However, little emphasis has been placed on it. This thesis tries to seek out some valuable materials and principles from SHUO WEN JIE ZI because of its special value of dialect words. In the thesis, which is a very important component of the study of dialect historical study and the investigation of the historical evolvement trace and rule of Chinese dialect words by inducing and comparatively analyzing the materials of dialect words in the three books , SHUO WEN JIE ZI, DIALECT and CHINESE DIALECT DICTIONARY.Based on Chinese dialect words in Xu Shen's SHUO WEN JIE ZI, and aided by Yang Xiong's DIALECT , this thesis purports to seek out the historical evolvement trace and rule of Chinese dialect words during more than two thousand years from the macro point of view, and put forward some suggestion of some problems by looking up the corresponding dialect words into modern Chinese dialect , and applying statistics induction and diachronic comparison studying method into the comparative analysis of ancient and modern Chinese dialect materials, in so as to expound on the division, flow and evolvement in the process of dialect words development.This thesis contains four chapters (including the structure and conclusion ):The first chapter : Introduction. In this part, we introduce the principal study of dialect words from the 20th century, and the writing framework, the methodology, the purpose and the main reference book.The second chapter rcomparison between dialect words in SHUO WEN JIE ZI and modem Chinese dialect words, is the standpoint and base of this study, which is divided into three sections : on SHUO WEN JIE ZI, on DIALECT and on CHINESE DIALECT DICTIONARY , each section having done statistic induction of forms , sounds, meanings, available regions and source.The third chapter.we have analyzed the geographical change of the ancient and modern Chinese dialect words from available region comparison. From above , the underlying rules of the geographical change of Chinese dialect words from Han Dynasty to modern society are induced by means of the comparison of available regions of ancient and modern Chinese dialect words(direction and range changes). A great many ancient Chinese dialect words have died out, the other still in use have intended to be expanded and more southwards so that north dialect district has become bigger and bigger , north and south dialect are interfaced to produce the dialect complexity . Finally what Chinese dialect words in SHUO WEN JIE ZI remain in modern dialect districts is that Chinese dialect words in Min dialect are the most while those in Mandarin the fewest.The fourth chapter: we have analyzed the semantie evolution of the ancient and modem Chinese dialect words from the semantic comparison . Making the semantic comparison between ancient Chinese dialect words and the modem ones which are both listed above , we have generalized the developing semantic type : the invariability of the semantic , the extension of the semantic , the reduction of the semantic and the transfer of the semantic.
