The Song of Youth by Yang Mo is a "red" classic in the 1950s and Private Life by Chen Ran is a specimen of individualized writing in the 1990s. There is a span of nearly half a century between their respective creations and publications. Though they both centre on the growth of the female intellectual, they are greatly different in the concepts of "growth" and "the subject of growth", concrete morals and ethical appeal, due to the difference of times. They narrate the different growths of Ling Daojing and Ni Aoao in different social backgrounds and convey different ethical appeals to female: the general narrative of masses ethics and the individualized narrative of free ethics. Thus from the perspective of ethical narrative, this thesis compares The Song of Youth with Private Life and attempts to reveal the restraint and influence of the social, political and cultural background on the writer's creation. Based on this, this thesis seeks for normal concepts of social politics and culture and hopes to contribute to the build-up of a favorable environment for the literary development. The first and second parts analyze and define the modes and forms of female ethical narrative in the two novels. The first studies the representation of the mode of female ethical narrative in novelistic content and emphatically compares their different choices of moral on freedom, loneliness, love and death; the second studies the representation of the mode of female ethical narrative in novelistic form, including narrative structure and narrative language. The third part studies therelevant social background and further explores the source of ethical narrative in terms of human and literature. Based upon the above discussion, the conclusion points out the author's opinion that the individualized narrative of free ethics is much closer to human and literature than the general narrative of masses ethics and it is naturally closely connected with the social political and cultural environment. The "New Man" celebrated in the 1950s was located in the community and literature was regarded as a valuable weapon at that time; the "Individual" pursued in the 1990s stressed self-interest and the multi-value view of literature enabled literature to be in a free environment. Thus the normal development of literature depends on that of social environment to some degree. This thesis attempts to appeal for a normal social and political environment favorable for the literal development.
