Double-NP sentences can be divided into different categories from different perspectives. This thesis, guided by the Theory of Three-dimensions and Optimality Theory, focusesdiscussion on two kinds of Double-NP sentences generated by the movement: OSV sentencepatterns and SOV sentence patterns and analyses the main constraints in the process ofgenerating two kinds of Double-NP sentences. Based on the analysis, exploration on thedifferent systematic properties of two kinds of Double-NP sentences is further done. Content: 1. Define Double-NP sentences and determine the range of this thesis. Eliminate thesituations in which patient NP can't move according to the strength of the patient. 2. Analyse the constraints in the process of generating sentence patternâ… ; guided byOptimality Theory, analysis on the semantic problems in sentence patternâ… which transformsfrom special sentences: Universal-quantification sentences and Double-object sentences isdone. 3. Analyse the constraints in the process of generating sentence pattern â…¡; guided byOptimality Theory, analysis on the semantic problems in sentence patternâ…¡which transformsfrom special sentences: Universal-quantification sentences and Double-object sentences isdone. Sentence pattern â…¡ is more restricted than sentence patternâ… : Many [-animate] NPcan't move according to the Possession Principle; Many [+animate] NP can't move accordingto the Animate Principle. 4. Double-NP sentences can be divided into two categories according to the semanticsequence of nouns before Double-NP sentences. One is sentence patternâ… which obeys thissemantic sequence. The other is sentence pattern â…¡ which violates this semantic sequence. They also show different properties in pragmatic functions: Nouns in the position of NP1 aretopics of the whole sentence; Nouns in the position of NP2 are subtopics.
