The importance of sentence patterns in foreign language teaching is self-evident, while the current study only focused on understanding Chinese sentences while not generating sentences. Thus the roles of these kinds of sentence patterns in foreign language teaching are limited. Functional sentence pattern is based on the practice of foreign language teaching and it produced a new type of sentence pattern, which has great generating ability. And to a certain extent it overcomes the disadvantages of the structuralist theory of sentence pattern and meets the requirments of the foreign language teaching. The so-called "functional sentence pattern" focuses on the specific function of each sentence in the context; places great emphasis on the generating roles of function words; and has the combination of fixed words used as the mark of certain pattern. This paper mainly divided into two parts. The first part reviewed the morden Chinese sentence pattern and the sentence corpus of modern Chinese studies, and discusses the differences between the functional sentence patterns and conventional sentence patterns. Made a definition of the functional sentence pattern and discussed the differences with the Construction and the Chunk. Based on the previous research on function of modern Chinese we made a classification of the sentences'functions. The second part is the construction of the functional pattern corpus. In the process of sentence corpus's construction, we selected the texts of "Boya Chinese" elementary as the materials and then divided them into 1187 sentences. We worked out the principles and norms of the sentence segmentation and marking of the functions and sentence patterns.We used softwares such as EXCEL and ACCESS to mark on the corpus. Finally got the statistic of "Boya Chinese" elementary's functional sentences which is 881 in total; and the figure of the functional sentence patterns is 689. Thus we have a more comprehensive understanding of the sentence patterns which the beginners should master. The achievements of this study have a certain value on the reformation of foreign language teaching, compiling of teaching materials and guidance materials and other fields.
