Popular culture consumption grew vigorously in the wake of commodity economy and urbanization in the mid and late Ming Dynasty. From the angle of the consumers, this thesis is trying to analyse the process of consumption in the cities emphasizing on the region of Jiangsu and Zhejiang by means of three links of commoditilization, consumption medium as well as consumption groups of popular culture and, based on which, the social and cultural situations of that period are also probed into.The popular culture consumption in the cities of the mid and late Ming Dynasty cast light upon the growth of the stratum of townspeople and the consciousness of townspeople including the tendency of the pluralization of society and cultural secularization.
