| Shen Congwen was a distinctive writer in Chinese modern-contemporary literature history. His thought structure was very complicated, Chu culture was the background of his thought structure, and the Chinese traditional culture and the modern factors had affected him at one time. All before-mentioned factors resulted in his inescapable fate. He couldn't choose the road from so many different and contradict ional ways, at last, he had to wondering in the verge of the literature and life. Compared with his contemporary writers, the spiritual contradiction of Shen Congwen was very perplexed. He was walking in an unusual road of life. This article just tried to analyze and summarize the literary works of Shen Congwen, so that we can approach the spiritual world of Shen Congwen and exploring its significance.The first part reviewed the research history of Shen Congwen and introduced the research condition nowadays, then explained the reasons of contradictive viewpoint from different scholars.The second part analyzed the thought factors of Shen Congwen. The author thought that the Chu culture and Taoist had affected Shen Congwen deeply, meanwhile, there was an incomplete modern consciousness in Shen Congwen's thought. All before-mentioned factors hadn't united, but fighting each other, they composed Shen Congwen's complicated idea.The third part studied Shen Congwen's contradiction and agony through his literary works. Shen Congwen entered the city as a country person, but became a writer, a professor, the double identities made him ill at ease when he faced the difficult cultural choice. Therefore, Shen Congwen wondered in the border between the city culture and the country culture all his life, and had found his ideal paradise in difficult.The forth part analyzed Shen Congwen's writing from war of resistance against aggression to 1949, then studied why his articles became more and morelittle. He gave up the literature in contradiction and agony, but his soul became solemn and quiet.
