Dissertation On Water Image Featured In Novels Of Shen Cong Wen

This thesis is a dissertation on Shen Cong Wen who is an important writer in modern Chinese literature. Shen's novels have secured a strong position in philosophy of the modern Chinese literature with his style of maintaining "Life" and "humanity", together with his distinctive artistic and aesthetic ideal as well as study on fundamentals of literature.This thesis inquires on Shen's two extreme world which he experienced, namely rural and urban area. Within this conflicting world, Shen discovered the positive aspect of beautiful and innocent rural area and negative aspect of decadent city. He also discovered the area of change where both aspects exist together and studied the intersection of the two worlds consistently. The fundamental of Shen's work is "water". "Water" is both the beginning and the end for Shen's life and work. The focus of this thesis has been to analyze the meaning of "water" by studying his well-known works, and and discovered a number of important connections such as "image of water", "symbol of water" and "purification of water". The spirit shown in Shen's works pursuits healthy humanity as well.
