We all consider Yan Liben a vocational painter of the Tang Dynasty. However, this vocation wasn't so good at his time as it shows today. When been called "painter" by others, he felt hurt and despised seriously, and warned his son against painting forever. In the essay, this incident is named "Yan Liben Event". I will analyze the event from the beginning to end; analyze the social status and the vocation of Yan Liben; analyze that why several later biographers made different comments on it; analyze that who took part in painting in the tang dynasty, and analyze the social environment and the governmental system of that time. By doing these, we will see the possible situation of painting in the Tang Dynasty, for example, the social status of painting, the different background of the painters, and the relation of the two.
