The article is to find out the relations between Ding fang's art and culture environment in 1980s, by means of studying his art subject, style and pursue. Ding Fang, as one of the most extraordinary artists, reflects 1980s China culture trend, even more he can be recognized as a symbol of Chinese contemporary art explorer of the time. The symbol itself embodies by artist's conflict and bewilderment in front of tradition and modernity, western and China, and his impatient status. Ding fang can also be recognized as a typical representative of elite intellects who took human redemption as his own duty, while in 1980s the illusive idealism became mainstreams. After 1980s the life for thought descended instead by a strong speculative environment, the decline of culture consequences. Ding fang, man of the 1980s in Chinese contemporary art, therefore faded away from our view. But at the beginning of this century, he hold his retrospective exhibitions in Beijing,Shanghai,Guangzhou,etc, to show people his continuous pursue in painting's spirituality in the past 20 years. The article tries to take Ding fang as a typical case of 1980s Chinese art, and find out his revelatory meanings to Chinese contemporary art under the background of multi-cultures.
