Ding Fang, as a influential painter in this century, has tremendous impact on Chinese oil painting. His painting subject matters always depend on the Northwest Loess Plateau. In his works, the painting presents a picture of bleakness and pureness through ages, it depicts the diligent Chinese people with strong soul live in that hard land. Ding Fang stresses spiritual aspects in his artworks. In his earlier works in the early 1980s, most of his paintings depict the life of Northern Chinese farmers, for instance:Drought Resisting, The Harvest and some character sketch works, the character features of his paintings are all associated with North-West spirit culture with bold color in order to represent a sense of pon derance and dignity. In his latter works, he tries to integrate Christian spirit of Western culture to his oil paintings, which creates a feeling of mercy. In a way, Ding Fang intended to bring his mercy into Chinese social culture, he borrowed the Christian terms from Western culture so as to construe the barren spirit in this material world.
