Translator's Cultural Subjectivity In Cultural Translation

Translator study used to be focused on translator's language competency and simple description of his role in translation. However, the improvement in the understanding of cultural translation in both theory and practice has increasingly upgraded the translator's status. One of the most obvious evidences is that experts and theorists become more and more interested in the study of translator's subjectivity. That is to say, the better people understand cultural translation, the more and better translator's subjectivity is acknowledged and valued. This is what this thesis discusses about. It is intended to start from the status quo of the study in both cultural translation and translator's subjectivity so as to show that cultural translation raised as a concept of translation and its development provide the theoretical basis for the study of translator's subjectivity. The interactive relation will also be explained as an addition to show the importance of these two studies. The theme— translator's cultural subjectivity is raised in the second part. By definition, it is the cultural aspect of translator's subjectivity in cultural translation. Thus the concept of translator's cultural subjectivity will be defined and its different forms in translation will be shown as well. In the third part, "intersubjectivity" and "fusion of horizons" will be employed to explain how translator's cultural subjectivity is practiced. When the cultural subjectivity is carried out, translator's nature of "intermediacy" is performed in translation. Different kinds of "intermediate" nature will lead to different ways of "fusion of horizons" and thus will have a different influence on cultural translation. That's how the practice of translator's cultural subjectivity plays a role in cultural translation.The study of translator's subjectivity involves many disciplines such as esthetics, psychology and culture, etc. The significance of translator's cultural subjectivity study is that on one hand, it provides a new point of view for the study of existing target texts and gives constructive advice to translators in their translation practice, on the other.
