| Bing Xin is well known in China as a writer and much research work has been done in this respect. Her role as an outstanding translator, however, is not stressed enough and even ignored by scholars and the public regardless of her influential translations in China. This thesis intends to bring this ignored side of Bing Xin to light by conducting a systematic study on her translations, prefaces, postscripts and other writings related to her translations.Some scholars have approached Bing Xin translation studies through examination of her E-C translations while her C-E translation has been ignored so far. This thesis is the first to analyze her only C-E translation, Shuyuci of Li Qingzhao1. It is found out that the version has been culturally foreignized and linguistically domesticated. By studying her E-C translation of The Prophet, this thesis examines how she integrates her translating principles into practice. In translating The Prophet, she opts for a domesticating approach and subjects herself to the norms in the target culture by selecting the diction, syntactical structures and images that are considered as poetic in the target culture.This thesis also studies the reception of her two major E-C translations through a quantitative method and tries to account for their popularity in the past scores of years. It will reveal her cultural identity as a translator in the Chinese translation history and the Chinese literary history by examining her selection of source texts. Hopefully the results of this thesis will contribute to Bing Xin studies and the study of 20th century Chinese literary history and translation history. |
