In the 21st century, Chinese national politics and economy are prosperous and powerful day by day. It brings constantly expanding cultural self-confidence and cultural vision to us Chinese. Independent, individual, multitudinous contemporary culture forces Chinese painting to walk out from the conservative and secluded state of the traditional scholar painting. The care of this life and lifelike contemporary experience make the Chinese painters pay more attention to life and nature, so 'teaching from nature' or 'sketching in actual life' is an important means that contemporary painters improve and perfect as a language of painting.Landscape sketching is a major section in studying mountains-and-waters painting. It continuously developers with the history of landscape, from ancient landscape theory of Gu Kaizhi, Zong Bing to modern advocacy about landscape sketching of Huang Binhong , Li Keran, Fu Baoshi, the theory have developed and changed with different times, conforming with the aesthetic orientations of each eras, reflecting the changing course of painters' aesthetic ideas, when they deal with the relationship among people, nature and art in different periods. What are the similarities and differences between traditional state of landscape sketching and modern one? This paper is divided into five parts to describe it:Firstly, the realistic meaning of landscape sketching. Sketching is the precondition of the landscape development and innovation. Sketching is the bridge by which the painters draw lessons from the traditional art. Sketching is an important way in which the painters study the law of nature. Having expounded in these three parts, we can draw this conclusion that we can get twice result with half the effort in sketching. So we should pay special attention to it.Secondly, traditional state of landscape sketching. It can be dividing into three periods: Wei, Jin and Six Dynasties, Tang and Song dynasties; Yuan, Ming and Qing dynasties, the author explains the developments and changes of landscape sketching in these three stages and the relationship between the sketching and social culture.Thirdly, modern state of landscape sketching .In the social background that the culture and science develop at full speed, the author generalizes the sketching states and stands of the painters in Beijing School, Jinling School, Lingnan School and Chang'an...
