The Record of Painting Techniques was written between the Tang Dynasty and the Five Dynasty, which is an important theoretical article that symbolized the maturity of landscape ink painting. It includes painting theory, painting skills and painting appreciation as its content. The Record of Painting Techniques inherits from the theories of Zong Bing and Wang Wei and became the foundation of the ones of Guo Xi and Han Zhuo.It plays an extremely important role in the history of China's painting theory. Its author,Jing Hao,is not only a remarkable theorist but also an important artist who started the Northern Sect of Landscape Painting. The reason why the Record of Painting Techniques has been passed down to nowadays and still be consider valuable is that Jing Hao absorbed the painting theories of his predecessors and contemporaries and tested them in practice. The Record of Painting Techniques started with Hong Gu meeting an old man called “Shigu Yanzi”,its content is mostly related with the process that a painter should observe and gain an understanding of the objects, and then he should know the basic principles of them.Jing Hao had an experience that he painted thousands of paintings and then his works became true to life.So this thesis tries to verify the meaning of the Record of Painting Techniques via the experience of landscape sketching. We will inspect the application of important concepts in practice, which includes “True to Life”,“Four Classes”,“Two Malpractices”,“Four Brush-holding Postures”,“Six Essential” and“Understanding The Basics of Objects”,etc.During this process,we can deepen our understandings over traditional painting and find more ways to apply the Record of Painting Techniques to modern landscape painting.
