This dissertation mainly discusses the theme of the death on Virginia Woolf and her fournovels. Through the detailed analysis of the death complex in The Voyage Out, Mrs Dalloway,To the Lighthouse and The Waves, it elaborates the alternative expressions of Woolf's publicand private selves in her fictitious texts, and reveals her unique interpretation of the death andthe double pressures caused by her life story and social environment, finally all of the factorslead to Woolf's suicide. The dissertation includes four Chapters: Chapter one briefly accountsthe essence revealed in the stream of consciousness novel and the philosophical andpsychological basis that have the enormous influence on the stream of consciousness novelist;Chapter two dwells on Woolf's early life story; Chapter three elaborates the death complex inWoolf's four novels; Chapter four specifies Woolf's emotional loss in her last few years.Conclusion: This dissertation, through the analysis of the death complex expressed in Woolf'sworks and the reality of her suicide, reveals profoundly the fundamental reasons resulted inher irresistible self-depression in her mental life are the individual experience and socialenvironment.
