This thesis focuses on how to develop students'communicativecompetence in English teaching. Some concrete methods and activities whichcan integrate culture and language teaching are introduced.The expression "communicative competence "has been extended and nowmeaning has been added to it by many linguists since it was coined byHymes .The theories and approaches have given great insights into languageteaching and students can see their capabilities and become moreself-confident. Student's grammatical foundation is strengthened and theirspeaking and listening skills have been increased to some extent.This thesis aims at promoting the acquisition of communicativecompetence. To achieve this purpose communicative competence should bedeveloped through communicative activities in classes. And communicativecompetence for intensive reading should be developed as well. In addition,language and culture need to be taught in an integrated way.Communicative competence is the sublimation of people's spiritual life.Developing communicative competence is of vital importance in order tomaster and use English in the world, make friends with other countries, andcommunicate with native speakers effectively.
