In the first place, the thesis points out the puzzles lie in the studies of Li Ye: He had made big achievements in mathematics research, and tried to make his book known to everyone, but why he had no students in mathematics? The thesis sets forth the author's reflections on the history of science and technology of China. Then the author argues that the method of contextualization can solve the problem, and makes a particular discussion on context. In succession, according to the mathematics putting Li Ye into the social environments of his times, the author sets up the context by using the method to make a further study of LiYe.In chapter two, this treaty deals with at length the society's view towards the mathematics knowledge: connotation and extension. Then the author analyzes Li Ye's view of mathematics.In chapter three, the author has a discussion on the living styles and social status of the mathematics researchers, and makes a conclusion that LiYe is a Confucian, not a scientist or mathematician.
