| The prepositions "æœ"and "对"are widely used in Modern Chinese. Theycan not only be used to introduce the direction of an action, but also used tointroduce the object of an action which is a word indicating a person or thing.Sometimes they can be replaced by each other when they were used tointroduce the object semantic roles. This thesis attempts to find the specificconditions in which they replace each other freely.When the Case Grammar raised by Fillmore was introduced into thestudy of Chinese grammar, there were many scholars have studied thesemantic roles and some questions about the case. But there isn't definitestudy about the object roles which is related to the main verb in the predicateof the sentence. This thesis attempts to find the distinctive characteristics ofthe object in Modern Chinese by comparing the object with the patient, thelocation and the dative in the Chapter One. Then in the Chapter Two we usethe conclusion of the Chapter One combining with the meanings of thepreposition words"æœ"and"对",the characteristics of the verbs concernedwith the object, to find out the conditions that determining the uses of the twoprepositions .The characteristics of the object are the causally affected, the sentienceand/or perception and the independent existence.
