William Faulkner creates the great Yoknapatawpha saga, within which thereconsists of many female figures from different social classes with striking personalityand hard destiny. Through the panoramic illustration of the writing about the femalein Faulkner's main works in Yoknapatawpha saga, his writing is studied from bothhorizontal and vertical perspective, and his views on them are discussed too. Inaddition, there is a probe into the reasons that influenced Faulkner's writing aboutfemales and resulted in or affected his views on them.Part I: The females in Yoknapatawpha saga. According to Faulkner's differentattitudes to his heroines changing along with their age and specific identity, thefemales in his works can be divided into three types: young females, incompetentmothers and old women. There are elaborate analyses about controversial youngladies based on the text, and the whole depiction of the most heroines in his mainworks will present us a horizontal and perceptual grasp of the essential features of hiswriting about females.Part II: Faulkner's views on females and their evolution. The views of Faulkneron females are firstly discussed. Most of the females in Faulkner's works have astrong personality, which though shows differently in different types of the female, inessence they hide within themselves the writer's deep awe to the female strength. Andthis is the perceptual aspect of his views on females. In addition, Faulkner used tomeasure his heroines on the basis of traditional ideas subconsciously. In other words,Faulkner's rational judgement towards females is relevant to traditional ideas. Therefore, his views on them come from the unity of the two factors.Meantime, by penetrating into his writing of females from a vertical point ofview, it is discovered that Faulkner's subjective attitude towards the female undergoesa delicate and dynamic evolutionary course. On one hand, although it is hard for himto conquer his deep-rooted fear to young women all the time, his basic emotionaltendency towards females changed from severity in his earlier period to compassionin the later period, which is expressed in the alteration of his writing about youngfemales and mothers outstandingly. On the other hand, in accordance with the changeof his writing about females by stage when he made major depiction on differentkinds of them, there is a return to tradition in Faulkner with mature thought. But thedomestic scholars used to discuss this topic statically, and no one has had adescription on its evolution course until now.
