| This paper intends to explore the writing on females in the novel named Two Families in Fifty Years or Bailu Village(Bai Lu Yuan in Chinese) by Chen Zhongshi in the new age of China, emphasizing on text research.In the first chapter, the author presents three forms of statistics on the narration of females in the novel:the proportion of writing on females, the ways of narration and the analysis and comparisons of character and life experiences of female images such as Bai Ling, Tian Xiao’e and Bai Zhaoshi in the novel and other masterpieces at all times and in all countries like Quiet flows the Don, Dream of Red Mansions, Song of Youth, thus the summary of their similarities.The research indicates that the writing on females is the principal part in the novel. There are only bits and pieces of trivial, intermittent and disconnected narration. However, the writing on female figures is of rich types and bright personalities. On this basis, the novel gradually developed "imagery of groups of females" and heightened the reform in the century and sorrowful scene of the time, but there is still no woman of life and soul who should have a full and complete personality.In the second chapter, the author introduces the western theory of feminism about "females" and "women". The purposes of analysis and discussion are to discover whether the female characters are defined to be woman instead of female in the novel. It suggests that the sense of woman is not completely present but it is isolated and imbalanced in the personal structure:sometimes obvious, emphasizing on gender characteristics, and sometimes weakened, ignoring the gender characteristics. However, the female "Motherhood" elements are relatively shallow on the whole.In the third chapter, the author analyzes in-depth the complex state of mind of Chen Zhongshi on the creation of Tian Xiao’e, Bai Ling and other female characters, revealing the writer’s "anxiety":the national culture and humanitarian feelings which affect his unified value judgments on women; at the same time, the epic location and male perspective also restricts the writing on females. Nevertheless, on the whole, the writer can stand in the perspective of "human being" to observe China women and their tragedy objectively, and present deep sympathy and respect.In the conclusion part, the author affirms the milestone significance of writing on females in the novel in Chinese Contemporary Literature ":faithful presentation and reduction of survival status of modern Chinese women, the first-time vivid depiction of Chinese women on the social role and social function, a complete presentation of women as the natural ones, societal ones and the ideal ones, giving prominence to the hardships of life for women in different periods.To sum up, the writing on females by Chen Zhongshi is not vulgar Erotic Imagination, but the soul and body tension and limitation of Chinese women on the form of equivalent perception and literature, hence revealing the truth of life in changes in modern society. |
