Study On Joseph Edkins Who Belongs To London Missionary Society In England

Joseph Edkins (1823-1905) is a famous sinologist and missionary of London Missionary Society. In china, he translated many foreign scientific works, systematicly introduced foreign economical theor ~ies, supported Chinese women education, and researched Chinese religions. Due to historical reason, Chinese mainland scholars don't have deeply and systematicly researched him, on account of limitation of subject and pattern of thinking, there is definite defect about all activities of Joseph Edkins in China for foreign scholars. This article makes full use of writings of Joseph Edkins and related materials of oversea scholars, utilizes subject theories and study method of history, sociology, education and theology, analyzes and expounds all his activities in China from different direction and different position, gives objective evaluation about his life.
