| Joseph Edkins(1823-1905),a famous British Sinologist and missionary in the nineteeth century.Under the purpose of the mission,he translated a large number of western scientific and technology works during the several decades he lived in China.For an in-depth understanding of China,Joseph Edkins researched of Chinese humanities,history,language,religion,economic and other aspects,and achieved certain results.In order to rich the study of Joseph Edkins,this paper make a special effort to present Joseph Edkins’ concept of civilization of China is Originated from the West.Then,discuss his education thought,including education for women,childrens,the blind and the criminal.Through the study of his translation of ancient Greek,Roman literature and English literature,to analysis how Joseph Edkins combinated the literary ideas with missionary intentions.I hope I can enrich the research on Joseph Edkins with my dicussion. |
