Nationalism is the key factor which influences the development of modern Chinese history. In the early days of 20th century, the nationalistic educational trend of thought had a profound effect on China inevitably, no matter in the central cities or the marginal areas, no matter as to the shocking national events or regional events. Many schools, especially the mission schools all had to change their own ways of development, embodying the national recognition consciousness of different ways and degrees. But some exceptions exist among them. This thesis is focused on the coastal city Shantou, which is located in the political and cultural marginal region, mainly in the macroscopical historical background of the rising trend of thought of modern Chinese nationalism. It takes the development process of a mission feminine school Shantou Shude Feminine School as an example, discussing the special trait which is embodied by the coastal Zion feminine school at the historical pivotal moment when it received the right of education in 1920s. The trait is as follows. The students in Shude Feminine School showed a calm and peaceful onlooking attitude when the whole society was advocating nationalism against imperialistic aggression, mission schools suffered from impact and different kinds of schools and students were looking for and showed their own recognition towards the nation in different ways. The feminine school continued to develop individually in its own way. From this research subject, we can get the conclusion that comprehensive factors such as regional character, scholastic property, educational pattern and difference in students' gender determine that students cultivated by different schools have different sense of recognition towards country, nation and culture. It is such idealistic consciousness that makes students influence and determine the fate of the school. The step and direction of different individuals are also different in the historical fatal events, even though they are in the same field. Therefore, we cannot over-simplify when discussing history. We should not only notice the general direction and trend of the history, but also research some special individuals which are different from the general tide and explore the historical events with multi-lay from different visual angles. In this way, we can know about the change process of specific historical events more profoundly and revert the diversity character of history. This thesis adopts the research method of nuncupation rather than single literature and historical data research. It makes comprehensive use of all kinds of literature and nuncupation materials to introduce modern Shantou Shude Feminine School's establishment and development process, and analyze Shude Feminine School's management characteristics, educational patterns as well as school's influence on students, discussing why Shude such a mission feminine school can calmly face the fierce strike from Chinese nationalism's trend of thought in 1920s and choose a development way which is different from the one of other mission schools that they developed naturally and died out naturally eventually. Besides, it also discusses how to treat Shude Feminine School's special fate and historical diversity from the angles of gender and region.
