Artistic ideoreaim is the core of Chinese aesthetics in classical Chinese poetry and hence becomes the soul of poetry translation. It has been established for a long time and conveys rich connotations. It is not only the fusion of the subjective feelings and thoughts with the objective scenes and objects but also the images beyond images, with which the poetic flavor is presented and loftiness achieved. Its beauty and delicacy are quite beyond comparison, providing readers with a vast imaginary sphere. It is true of shi poetry. However, in a consideration of ci poetry, artistic ideoreaim is an even more important element. Among a large number of ci poets, Li Qingzhao stands out and shares the world with them. She is one of the foremost lyricists in her own right, who creates beautiful and profound ideoreaim with her subtle feelings and delicate language. Her ci - Yi'an Ci, the representative of artistic ideoreaim creating is refined and fresh, conveying infinite significance beyond the uttered words.However, since the beauty of artistic ideoreaim is ineffable, to represent the original artistic ideoreaim is a formidable task. Based on a tentative yet systematic exploration into the Chinese traditional theory of artistic ideoreaim, the present thesis emphasizes that artistic ideoreaim is actualized by both theauthor and the reader. In the transference of artistic ideorealm, a translator has two tasks, one as a reader and the other a rewriter. To transfer artistic ideorealm is in essence a re-creative art. The translator's subjective creativity in the process of transferring artistic ideorealm is mainly manifested in the following two aspects: on the one hand, the translator mentally reconstructs the overall aesthetic images of the original; on the other hand, he makes full use of his artistic skills to represent them in the target language. To represent the indescribably free and transparent ideorealm is exceedingly difficult. Through a comparative study of the two translations of Yi'an d, in which the translators play subjective roles, the present thesis aims to transform the intangible beauty of artistic ideorealm into the tangible aesthetic constituents and help to provide translators with some effective and workable methods for the transference of artistic ideorealm.This thesis consists of five chapters besides introduction and conclusion.The introduction briefs the content and the basic structure of the thesis;Chapter One makes a tentative but systematic exploration into the theory of artistic ideorealm and points out that artistic ideorealm is actually completed by both the author and the reader;Chapter Two is an introduction of Yi'an Ci as the representative of artistic ideorealm creation — the different types of artistic ideorealm produced in the poems of different periods and its major characteristics — and its English translations in China and America;Chapter Three makes an elucidation of the translators' subjective creativity in the process of understanding the original artistic ideorealm and how it gives an impact to the translators' mental pictures of the original;Chapter Four expounds how the translators' subjective creativity in the process of representing throws influence on the artistic ideorealm that they will accomplish;Chapter Five puts forward that the translator should, based on the comparative study, first and foremost try to comprehend the original text and form a picture in his mind, then keep the three aesthetic constituents of artistic ideorealm as efficiently as possible, and finally the translator may attempt to reproduce the musical beauty to achieve adequacy both in form and spirit;The conclusion provides the summary of the whole thesis.
