Camille Saint-Saens is a famous French composer and pianist, also known as a pipeorganer and as a conductor. His works is over 170, nearly involving all the musical areas. In his whole life, he produced 13 operas, including the most successful production Samson and Dalilah. This story is derived from Judges of Bible * the Old Testament. And this story of Bible is widespread, which is actually a vivid and dramatic, also thought-provoking passage of Israeli history. The thesis discusses and analyzes Samson and Dalilah from five parts, that is, the development of French opera, the whole life and main productions of Saint-Saens, the source and theme of Samson and Dalilah, musical characteristics and main characters, and appreciation of three arias related to gut. The first chapter tells the history and cultural background when the opera is produced, that is, the opera is an outcome of which incident in French opera history and what kind of opera subjects. The second appreciates the opera with the introduction of Camille Saint-Saens' life and his works. The last three chapters analyze the production from three aspects, that is, from source to theme, from musical characteristics tomain characters, from the heroine Dalilah' s three arias. Andthe last three chapters is the key of the whole thesis.The first heroine in this opera is acted by a mezzo-soprano,and the author is a also mezzo-soprano and has studied its mainaria, that is why the opera is chosen to be studied in thethesis.
