Medieval Universities that were known as one of the flowers of Europe in the Middle Ages rose in the 11th or 12th and developed in the 13th century. The earliest universities in Europe contained Bologna University, Paris University, Oxford University and so on, which became models for the modern universities. The rise of the medieval universities mainly included the four main causes, namely the revival of cities, the development of economic,the need of society as well as the mixture of the Christian civilization and the orient civilization. The medieval European universities that had the same organizations as medieval Guild, with the purpose of educating the clergies and lawyers, and the courses of medieval universities almost included all the courses that modern universities have now. The medieval universities showed their special characters that were due to different geographic environments and social backgrounds. The universities aimed at freedom at first, and then with the development of themselves, the quality of the medieval universities changed and became noble, even became the appendant of the religion. The appearance of medieval European universities made a great contribution to the preserving and advocating of culture. They also became the training centers of the new academic researchers and broke the monopoly of church on education. Furthermore, they played a significant part in the Renaissance, Reformation, the birth of modern science and so on. Meanwhile, the medieval European universities gestated the pattern of modern universities. Modern European universities inherited the autonomy, democracy and internationalism of medieval universities. So far, studying the medieval universities is beneficial to construct our modern educational system.
