The improvement of writing ability for Chinese English learners is always a difficult task. Semantic and synthetic errors are worthwhile to be analyzed, because they will not be eliminated just through practicing and revising. Even though the advanced English learners do not have so many errors, their compositions are still far from the native style. The above phenomenon is a very interesting topic for researching; therefore this thesis focuses on it and comes up with some helpful suggestions for Chinese English learners and teachers. In this paper, the author started with the college students'writing error analysis, and did the research on the causes and reasons of those errors. One important reason is that the English learners wrote in English with Chinese discourse thought patterns and not paid enough attention to the cultural difference between Western and Oriental cultural background. Differences in discourse thought patterns and cultures become a huge obstacle to improve the writing ability of Chinese L2 English learners, which is the predominant aspect for English teachers to emphasize on the students'writing ability will be better, and meanwhile with the uprising cultural awareness, L2student can write better in English composition writing. This paper is divided into five parts. Chapter one is the introduction. Chapter two reviews the development of the theories of discourse thought patterns, cultural influence, and English L2 composition. In addition, it also describes the previous domestic and abroad research in this area. Chapter three introduces the research setting, method and instrument, and the data collection. Chapter four has two aspects, one describes the result of the research, and the other probes into the cultural influence on semantic, syntactic and discourse in English L2 composition; Chapter five the conclusion of the paper, summarizing the significance of the research, and giving the suggestions.
