In the field of English teaching and learning, reading is always the deep concern of both teachers and students. A lot of efforts have been made to cultivate students'reading strategies, and different teachers usually conduct their teaching reading from different angles, but teaching reading from the perspective of text patterns is not very common. This thesis makes explorative studies on teaching reading by drawing heavily on text patterns, and tries to find out whether teaching reading from a text-pattern perspective is beneficial to training students'reading strategies and improving their reading. This thesis is divided into six chapters. Chapter one is a brief introduction to the whole thesis. Chapter two reviews previous researches related to teaching reading, including nature of reading, reading models and the function of text as a site of interaction between the writer and the readers. Chapter three concerns the knowledge of text patterns. Clause relations and discourse organizing words are the basis for the understanding of text patterns. Clause relations include matching relation, logical sequence relation and multiple clause relation. Discourse organizing words have two features, one is generality and abstractness, and the other is reference. These words have the power of signaling larger patterns of texts. Four basic text patterns are mentioned in this thesis: problem-solution pattern, claim-counterclaim pattern, question-answer pattern and general-specific pattern.
