Zhang Henshui In 1940s

Studies on Zhang Henshui are always on a embarrassed situation. On one hand, as a master of Light Literature Mr. Zhang gained a resounding success and popularity; because of the big quantity of productions and high quality of writings, Mr. Zhang's wits have drawn the attention of the research domain. But on the other hand, since Mr. Zhang is a writer of popular novel, in the contemporary literature domain his novels have not been attached importance to meanings of the literary history and researches on Zhang Henshui's literary production. In this way, Light Literature domain always regard Zhang Henshui as a representative writer that hold the balance of literature, but the researches on Zhang Henshui are always stagnant.This stagnancy directly results in the short of depth and comprehensiveness in the study of Zhang Henshui. The most noticeable case in point is the lack of study of Zhang Henshui's works created when he lived in Chongqing in 1940s. This is one of the very important periods for the study of Zhang Henshui, in which great change has occurred not only in the writer's thoughts but also in his works' style and theme. But the cause and complexity of this change were seldom mentioned or elaborated. Till now, the study of this period has been limited to the description in the biographic study of the writer, or the rough introduction of it when dwelling on his later-on works. This is surly lack of depth and profundity. The overlook of the 1940s, a period of change, has made the study of Zhang Henshui only fruitful in the study of the early period when his novels Sad and Ridiculous Causes came out, but the significance and value of his works created during 1940s—1950s can not really make sense.Therefore, this dissertation tries to start from Zhang Henshui's works in 1940's and comb his life experiences in that age, in order to analyze Mr. Zhang's great and complicated changes in his works, by studying the author's life experiences, the influences of New Literature and the functions of the subtle surroundings. In addition, this dissertation is expected to recur the environment where the author lives in, make out the locus of his changes in spirits and probe into the profound reasons of the changes in his 1940's works.Such research can not only help break through the choke point in Zhang Henshui's studies, but also have new cognizance of the many problems appears when the research on light literature is brushed aside, by studying the sample of such a author. The problems disregarded include: the rules of light literature's development, the relationship between New Literature and Light Literature and the value and significance of Light Literature, etc.
