Ding Ling was the most important revolutionary woman writer in the Chinese contemporary literature history. As she was deeply caught in political turmoil, her life was full of twists and misfortunes. Her creative style, which was greatly affected, was covered with tragic hues.This thesis starts from her own life and her creations with the aim of illustrating her tragic life and her creative process, analyzing her tragic nature and exploring her tragic source. Through the analysis of the image of Ding Ling as a specific case, this thesis intends to reveal the inevitability of the tragedy of the Chinese contemporary literature with the intensified national contradictions and class contradictions in the background.The body of this thesis contains three sections.Section One tracks down her conversion from the pursuit of the personality liberation to the social revolution in order to demonstrate her tragic course in which Ding Ling pursued the lofty goal continuously only to find the loss of the self-image.Section Two is cut into by female consciousness and intellectual consciousness to show concern for Ding Ling' s sufferings and perplexities as a woman writer on the way to the revolution under the special situations in China. For national independence and class liberation, she proceeded painful self-remoulding to answer to the demands of the Party. In the course of self-remoulding, she gradually lost the self-image.
