Studies of basic vocabulary are a fundamental work of language studies, which is of great significance for language studies, language teaching, standardization of words and phrases, compilation of dictionary and studies of other relevant branches of learning. However, for a long time, it has held only a minor position in the studies of vocabulary, and emphasis was placed on the classified description of common words. On the basis of existing study achievements, the Author of the article systemically studied basic words of modern Uygur language by applying theories and knowledge on linguistics and lexicology and employing the method of combination of qualitative analysis and quantitative analysis. This article is composed of five parts. The first part is introduction, mainly dealing with the significance and status quo of studies on basic words of modern Uygur language, and study methods and content of this article. The second part concerns the definition of basic words of Uygur language, exploring the definition, quantity, composition, criteria and steps of determination of basic words of Uygur language. On the basis of theories and statistics, the author determined 2366 basic words of Uygur language, laying a foundation for the article. In the third part, these basic words of Uygur language are classified into different groups by meaning, grammar, structure and original source. The fourth part, on the basis of the third part, discussed the characteristics of basic words of modern Uygur language, including those common with other languages and those unique for themselves. The fifth part is the conclusion, in which the innovation and imperfection of this article is summarized.
