At the period of late Ming and early Qing Dynasty, western missionaries came toChina to propagate Catholicism. At the same time ,they introduced western science andculture to China. After being spread into China as a strange outside culture, westernlearning(Catholicism and western science and culture) aroused quite complicated reactionin Chinese society. Deferent personages and different regions'response were all different.The attitudes of southern intellectuals and northern intellectuals treating western learninghad obvious differences. This article makes a concrete analysis to the diffenence ofsouthern intellectuals'and northern intellectuals'attitudes toward western learning, andanalyses the reason to cause this kind of difference.The whole article is divided into seven parts altogether.The foreword briefly review the research states towards various kinds of responses towestern learning of intellectuals and the western learning's spread in different areas in theperiod of late Ming and early Qing Dynasty, and the cultural diffenences between the southand the north, and definitize the subject of this article.Heading one enumerate the famous intellectuals Catholic and the famous intellectualsthat studed western science and culture. Data contrast analyses that southern famousintellectuals Catholic and intellectuals that studed western science and culture were bothmore than north, which indicates that southern intellectuals'attitude to western learningwas more active and they accepted western learning abroader.Heading two enumerate the important incidents that intellectuals repeled westernlearning and the famous intellectuals that repeled Catholicism. The contrast analyses thatsouthern intellectuals repelled western learning stronger than northern intellectuals.Heading three analyses the causes of southern intellectuals accepted western learningabroader. The western learning's spreading routh from south to north made the south touchwestern learning at first.
