As an instrument for communication and as well as a carrier of culture, language seems to be "a reservoir to store tradition"(Gadamer). Therefore, the western culture "which is based on analysis" can only be created by the western people who use phonography, and on the other hand, Chinese who use ideography could only create "the eastern culture which is based on synthesis"(JI, Xianlin). However, are there any different features between Chinese culture and Japanese culture although both China and Japan are branches of Asian culture? And what about their different national tradition that contained in the language respectively? In light of the idea that Professor Huntington has ever declared, "culture and the conflicts in culture will determine the politics around the world", the question I mentioned above will certainly be an important and urgent issue for us to discuss. By comparing the differences in Chinese and Japanese, this paper takes Chinese Edition The Romance of the Three Kingdoms and its Japanese counterpart as examples and pursues a survey on their different ethnic and cultural features. One of the most important viewpoints in my paper is that the differences between Chinese culture and Japanese culture reflect in the introverted feature of Japanese culture which focuses on embodying the inmost feelings of each individuality and the extroverted feature of Chinese culture which puts stress on declaring the relationship between individuality and the outside world and the social comments on individuality. Owing to the above features, the ambition-oriented literature takes its shape in China and inmost-oriented literature takes its shape in Japan. Therefore, I'm convinced that we will make big gains in studying Chinese language and culture by comparing the differences in Chinese, English and Japanese. And this is a goal I will strive towards in future.
