China, a great country with a history of over 5,000 years, boasts its splendid culture and abundant tourist resources. Chinese tourist writings (hereinafter referred to as "CTW"), as a principal means of promoting tourism, introduce the natural wonders and historical relics to oversea friends and cast an irresistible charm on them.Because most of the tourist writings are translated from Chinese instead of being directly written in English, the quality of translation is crucial to promote tourism and attract oversea visitors. However, the actuality of CTW translation is not optimistic and presses for immediate improvement. However, at present few translators have done some research on this topic, such research is still far from being sufficient and systematic. This thesis is designed to provide a comprehensive study in this field and explore proper translation strategies. Starting with a brief introduction to tourism and tourist writings, the thesis analyzes the CTW translation respectively from intralinguistic and extralinguistic aspects, and proposes three translation strategies especially designed for CTW with text typology and skopos theory applied. To be specific, all the proposed translation strategies are based on the characteristics of CTW.This thesis consists of four chapters besides introduction and conclusion.Introduction briefly outlines the theme and the basic structure of this thesis.Chapter 1 examines the basic knowledge about CTW, including its classification, functions and language features, which serve as a requisite preparation for subsequent discussion.Chapter 2 takes an intralinguistic study, analyzing CTW translation fromlexical, syntactic and contextual level in order to improve the accuracy and readability of CTW translation.Chapter 3 gives a further exploration on extralinguistic aspect mainly including language style and cultural elements. The discussion stresses that the CTW text is to be translated in favor of target foreign readers, by means of elegant expression to demonstrate the unique cultural characteristics.Chapter 4 focuses on the characteristics of CTW, and proposes three translation strategies especially designed for CTW with the help of text typology and skopos theory. Prohibition of Chinglish, reader-oriented approach and manipulation of the source text, these three strategies all aim at a smoother communication of CTW translation. Conclusion summarizes the whole thesis, provides suggestions to CTW translator, and points out the practical value of this thesis.
